Bastille night

14th July

To put it simply, Bastille night is the biggest party night in France. Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern French nation.

To round all of this off, the French, eat well, drink well and generally enjoy themselves. Here in Bergerac as all across France, the climax of the evening is a large firework display over the river. The local gunpowder factory ensures that the evening goes off with a very big bang.

The fireworks display is held just 10 minutes away from QuatreSaison gites and is well worth a visit if you are in the area on the evening of the 14th July.

Angouleme Ramparts Rally

Official website

19th to 21st September 2008

Every year the town of Angoulême in the Charente region of France plays host to a very special motoring event. The streets in the centre of this medieval town echo to the sound of historic racing cars, as the roads are closed to normal traffic.

The track, situated in the heart of Angoulême, runs around the ramparts of the town over a distance of 1.279km with 2 bends, 2 right angle corners and 3 hairpin bends. This street circuit remains unchanged since the first event held in 1939. This makes Angoulême a unique event in the whole of the motorsport calendar.
The event takes place over a whole day with practices in the morning and races in the afternoon. The competitors who are divided into 9 grids have a practice session of 20 minutes. Positions on the starting line depend on the practice times.

Angoulême really is a special event, and is only 90 minutes away from Quatresaison gites. Why not take a late summer break to drive through some of the finest countryside in France, pick up some very fine wine, and visit one of the last truely unique motoring events.
